Inswarm - Surely Death Is No Dream

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Year: 2008
RYM / Here

Inswarm creates music that has been described as claustrophobic industrial metal. the combination of haunting atmospheres, harsh synthetic machinery, sludgy and melancholic guitars , dispirited vocals over tribal drumming and pulsing mechanized beats. -Last fm

Wovoka - Paisté De

Year: 2007
RYM / Here

this is the absolute pinnacle of the wovoka family jams with spaced chanted voice, melted down mountains of rippling and snarling electric guitars, waves of sweet strummed acoustic guitars and galloping hand percussion torching us all to join them in their journey to the outer limits of time and space. -Time Lag

Quttinirpaaq - s/t

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Year: 2008
RYM / Here

Quttinirpaaq carve a crowd of sounds and push them slouching towards Bethlehem to raze it to the ground. A nearly-set cement slide of dissolving sludge-rock moves, this is massively slow, boulder-shattering, slow-bleed slime-core that sounds like Earth would sound if they fell down a well, all broken bones and shattered skin. -Last fm

Crow Tongue - Ghost Eye Seeker

Year: 2008
RYM / Here

"Timothy Renner and Æ Hoskin are the duo of Crow Tongue who present in this debut full length, Ghost : Eye : Seeker a flanging psychedelic free-for-all of weird folk and acidic noise whose mordant emission is enthralling as it is unique.
Charnel distortion from guitar and bowed “instruments” exude a canopy of rustling and prickling noise, a dense miasma of swelter about the self while Eastern instrumentation dovetails amidst the flushed haze steeping the air in psychedelic mysticism."- Heathen Harvest

The Night Terrors - Back to Zero

RYM / Here
Year: 2009

Electronic horror music with a centre stage for the theremin. Melbourne based The Night Terrors bring some orginality to a otherwise somewhat dusty theme. Live they are more impressive than on record, but still well worth checking out if you're up for something different.

D.A. - Odeon

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Year: 2009
RYM / Here
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

"D.A.’s darkly cosmic constructs neighbor the lazerbeam meditations from Emeralds and Infinity Window, with a distinctly dystopian vantage point as witnessed from their reported rooftop performances that overlook the Los Angeles police departments training grounds for riot control. Minor key melodies flutter over rotating sequences of electronics and slow-burning crescendos, all of which blossom with spectral washes of guitar and oceanic white noise. Dare it be said that D.A. might have outdone Emeralds’ nearly impeccable album of kosmische poetics on What Happened? Yeah, they probably did." - The Wire

Silvester Anfang - Echte Vlaamse Geiten

Year: 2007
RYM / Here

Highly Recommended! One of my favorite bands from the last couple of years. You can't get any closer to the original Amon Düül than this. Psychedelic drone improvisations galore! The only difference is that Silvester Anfang are darker and more hellish than their '60's German counterparts. This should be the soundtrack to every medieval horror movie. Expect more Silvester Anfang (I/II) here soon.

Spliff - Herzlichen Glückwunsch

Year: 1988
RYM / Here

Okay, something different for a change. Spliff is the Nina Hagen band. (And Lokomotive Kreuzberg). You might know them from their terrible 80's hit 'Carbonara', but they made a far better LP a few years later called 'Herzlichen Glückwunsch'. This is some really clever German disco/new wave rock. Highlights of the album are 'Das Blech' (which was also a hit in Germany) Wohin Wohin and S.O.S. The song 'Herr Kennedy' is my personal favorite.

The Nazgûl - The Nazgûl

Year: 1976 (?)
RYM / Here and Here

A kraut/dark ambient obscurity. Not much more is known besides the artists being Pippin and Frodo, although I can't imagine hobbits playing music this dark and gloomy! There is some discussion whether this is an authentic release or a '90s 'fraud'. The album certainly does sound a bit too polished to be recorded on a small label in the '70s. In the end it doesn't really matter, because the music is good either way. I've uploaded this in flac, really because I'm too lazy to convert everything to .mp3.

The Real Yeti Band - Yeti

Year: 1997
RYM / Here

Another release from the Coloured Rain label. (See also here and here). Again by the same artists (Captain Ilor, Swara Samrat and Herman the German). With only 4 listeners on last.fm this one is probably the rarest album in my collection, and that's a shame really because there's enough to enjoy here. Krautrock with an eclectic edge, reminding of Embryo and Guru Guru.

Ici Maintenants - Space and Time

Year: 2001
RYM / Here

Okay, I'm not going to highly recommend the third album in a row, but you'll really miss out on some great music if you skip this one. Ici Maintenants are 70's free festival legends Here and Now (C'est le French translation!) jamming together one more time. They sound better than ever: A bit more structured, but still very experimental, and keeping most of their tracks well over 10 minutes (which is always a good thing). You know what? After listening to Shakalayah again I'm just going to Highly Recommend this anyway!

Tangerine Dream - Sorcerer

Year: 1978
RYM / Here
.
Highly Recommended...... Again? Yeah, I can't help it either. A forgotten soundtrack from a a forgotten film. both deserve a better fate, William Friedkin delivered this high budget masterpiece after the exorcist, but for some reason the film flopped at the box office. The same goes for the accompanying soundtrack by Tangerine Dream. It's really on the same level as their highly acclaimed albums from the same period (Phaedra anyone?), but never got the attention it deserves. What is and what should never be. On a personal note: I never listened to this album when I was young, because I thought the music was too creepy :)

Magic Lantern - Platoon EP

Year: 2010
RYM/ Here

Long, laidback freakout songs to go with the last few days of the summer. Magic Lantern is best enjoyed with sun, barbecue and beer. Neighbours may not always approve, but hey, if they complain just invite them too! One of the songs isn't called Friendship for nothing.

Serpentina Satélite - Nothing to Say

Year: 2008
RYM / Here

Their new album is due out on September 6th, so if you've never heard of Serpentina Satélite, here's your chance! They are without doubt one of the best kraut/spacerock bands from South America. A lot of improvisation on this one; You can hear the Amon Düül influences throughout the entire cd. Not always original, but there's enough here to enjoy. My personal favorite is the 25 minute song 'Kommune 1'.

2nd Gen - Irony Is

Year: 2001
RYM / Here

2nd Gen is an experiment consisting of white noise, industrial beats, contorted voices and bass all blended together with a total disregard for the rules of music. And yet, somehow this strange mixture just works. I first heard 2nd Gen on the radio in 2001. It was in the middle of the night, and I was studying for my exams. Normally I'm not a fan of industrial music, but this just stuck to me. The obscure artist I was looking for didn't turn up in my internet searches the next day, and I forgot all about 2nd Gen until somewhere last year, when I found the album in a local cd store. Imagine my surprise when the music I had heard only once turned out the be even better than I thought!

Südstern 44 - Südstern 44

Year: 2007
RYM / Here

Very rare (400 copies) self titled album by Südstern 44. This time with songs, the longest clocking in at just over 14 minutes. A bit less spectacular than the 'Dampfwalze' album, but still some very good modern krautrock indeed! Sometimes edging toward shoegaze, but always finding that authentic psychedelic drive just in time. Reminds me of Talk Talk's Laughing Stock album for some reason, but that could be me. (That's a compliment by the way)

Südstern 44 - The Dampfwalze

Year: 2006
RYM / Here

Who needs songs? Südstern 44 sure doesn't. Here they present you with a continuous 70 minute psychedelic jam. It's a pity they ran out of cd at the end, because this could've continued for hours, and I don't think I would've minded. Think Amon Düül, but longer. Much longer.

Planet Gong - Live floating Anarchy

Year: 1977
RYM / Here

One of my all-time favorite albums. Planet Gong is Daevid Allen with free-festival legends Here and Now. This combination brings out the best in them both: A bit heavier than Daevid Allens usual work with Gong, and even more freaked out than Here and Nows other albums. A great combination of punk, space and psychedelic rock. Highly recommended! (Again)

Ufomammut - Eve

Year: 2010
RYM / Here

Already easily one of my favorite albums of 2010! The only thing possibly wrong with 'Eve' is that the first fourteen minutes, being the first of five parts from this conceptalbum devoted to the first woman on earth, are so good that it leaves you wondering for the remainder of the album what you've just experienced. Heavy, deep and sinister, Ufomammut creates a vast world of sound from which no-one can escape. Do not listen when it rains, because this is doom. Highly Recommended!

P205 - P205

Year: 1976
RYM / Here

P205 enjoyed quite a bit of success in their time, but have been lost in obscurity ever since. It's not difficult to imagine their popularity in the German festival scene of the time, as they seem to have been a sort of '70's Rammstein, with live shows involving burning torches, costumes and large marmor crosses. The album kicks of with some hard rocking, energetic festival songs. But it's the second part of the album that really steals the show with the two 9 minute krautrock gems 'I didn't care' and "Major God'. This is krautrock in its rawest and purest form. Great stuff!

P205 - Progressio Pereat Mundus

Year: 1978
RYM / Here

After a few succesful years in the festival scene, P205 recorded their first and only studio album. At only 300 original copies this one is even harder to find than their first album. The magic of the early recordings seems to have gone a bit, but it's still a nice find for every krautrock fan.
